Red and White Distressed Dresser Makeover

It is hot hot hot here in Arkansas.
I just came in from letting little man splash around in his little pool in the front yard.

And wishing spring weather stayed around longer :)

So we've had this sad little brown dresser in little man's room since we moved in.
It's got cute lines and is sturdy (besides one of the tracks missing)
but it has seen better days, poor thing.
Scratches galore.

I've been wanting to redo it for a while but never got up the drive to drag it from his bedroom.
So when it got dragged to the living room during our carpet installation,
I decided I needed to just get it done :)

Here's the sad, scratched up dresser:

Before painting, I gave it a good sanding down since it had so many scratches.
I also switched the bottom track to the top drawer so that it will have a track until I can find a replacement.
Better the bottom drawer fall than the top, right?
Then I gave it two good coats of a Sherwin Williams paint I got for five bucks at Habitat called "Pottery Barn Cream".
Perfect sounding, right?

It was gorgeous on too.
Though the heat about did me in on this guy.
It was over 90 degrees before nine in the morning.

While the white coats were drying,
I painted the drawer cut outs in a red enamel paint I had.
It took several coats and a lot of patience to get a nice gorgeous, slick coat on :)

While the red finished drying (that's why it looks all wonky, if you were wondering)
I tried to glaze it.
I don't know if it was the heat or what, but my glaze did not want to work.
It kept rubbing off the bottom coat of paint.
So I just dry-brushed some on which ended up working better than coating the whole thing.
I love the subtle touches of antique it gives it without going all over the white.

I also dry brushed glaze onto the red drawers.

And the original hardware got a coat of oil rubbed bronze.

I was worried about how the red would look but I ended up love love loving it!

And here's his final reveal!!

He's so fresh and bright...I gave it a good heavy distressing to bring out some of the dark wood underneath.
I have a thing for that :)

And the glaze added just enough antiquing all over.

Hubby helped me drag it back into little man's room where I decided that nothing that was on top of it before would work now :)
Don't you hate that?
I found a fabulous old crate I had picked up for three bucks a couple of weeks ago and plopped it on top.
It worked perfectly as a little shelf.
And the type on it is just amazing for a boy's room :)

Don't judge the messy bed and table...
I just had to show the dresser with little man's gallery wall.
I love the mix of red white and brown :)

One last look of the overall transformation...

And I guess it's just in time for fourth of july too :)
The red and white make me happy...
but they also kind of make me want to see fireworks too...
what's your favorite part about the Fourth?

  12. I love this dresser redo so much! I really want to start refinishing some furniture I have around the house but I feel a little overwhelmed with starting a big project like a dresser. I bought my little guy a rocking chair at an antique fair a month back and it is going to be my guinea pig. I'm so inspired looking around at your projects. I came by because I saw your endtable redo on tatertots & jello and ended up staying awhile. :) I'm your newest follower and I look forward to looking at new projects!
