Kid's Art Desk: Take Two

Happy Post-Halloween!!
Have your kids survived all the sugar-induced comas they've probably been in the past couple days?

Little man came home from school yesterday saying that he didn't want candy for a while.
You know that they've had enough candy when they say that :)

I'm so so excited to start showing you some fun Christmas projects but I don't want to burn you guys out too early.
Plus I'm waiting for a pretty day to get some good pictures.
At least a pretty day that I'm not stuck inside doing homework.
Which is rare these days.

I thought I'd show you another take on my kid's art desk that I showed you at the beginning of the year.

Remember the one I made Little man for Christmas?

This is the best present ever.
Seriously.

Not a day has gone by that it hasn't gotten used.

It's in the craft room, next to all of mommy's supplies so whenever I pull things out, he's pulling his out too.

He's constantly coloring, using stickers or making things from his supply boxes.
Since those pictures, I've added an IKEA roll of paper under the desk and another storage bin slides beneath the built-in bins to hold coloring books.

Whenever there are fun things in the Target dollars bin, dollar store or Michaels, I'll grab them up and rotate some things out.
You wouldn't believe the masterpieces made from popsicle sticks, googly eyes and pipe cleaners :)

I love that it lets him show his imagination and be creative.
And I don't have to constantly tell him that no, he cannot use the hot glue gun :)
Becuase he has his own set of supplies.
Which is the best thing. Ever.

All that to say...

I made another one.

Habitat had a ton come in and I snatched this one up for a client...

The cubbies were set up differently but are still perfect for holding art goodies.
And I adored the slanted shape of the desk.

Especially since painting it pink made it all girly with it's pretty slanted legs :)

Here's the girly-fied version:

Isn't it ca-ute?
I'm seriously in love with these desks.

I used a green paint pen to make the "H".

Want a run-down on the supplies you need?
Easy.

*Old Metal Desk
*Chalkboard Paint for top
*Spraypaint Color for body of the desk
*Paint Pen for Monogram
*Letter to use to trace for monogram (optional)

And I did several coats of chalkboard paint to make it durable.
Little man uses his constantly and I've only touched up one little area once
(which may or may not have been because I dropped a frame on it...hmm)

I love how easily customized they are.

And BONUS because they're magnetic! Ah-mazing for holding art, notes and flashcards.

Little man puts all his letter cards on his so we can practice saying the sounds.

And they're so expressive too :)

She was happy to head to her new home and I'm hoping her little girl loves it as much as little man loves his.

So seriously, got a little one that you're buying for this Christmas?

Grandchild, nepew/neice, friend, son/daughter?
Yup...they all need their own art desk.
Especially for all you crafters, because they craft while you craft :)

Run to Habitat or Goodwill and scoop one up.
The highest I've seen them for is 10 bucks.
And I've gotten all mine for five and under.

Get a few cubbies, fill them with dollar bin goodies and watch their faces light up Christmas morning!!

You can see more pictures of my son's art desk with his cute eraser and bins here.

Have any of you started Christmas shopping yet??

  4. CUTE!! I've got an old school desk that needs to be refinished. Did you have trouble getting the chalkboard paint to stick to the desktop? My desktop is just not attractive...this would be an AWESOME solution!

  7. I was absolutely head over heels for your idea and I thought I would NEVER in a million years find my own desk for my little boy. I went to Canton in TX and as I was walking out the gates found someone selling school desks--got one in PERFECT condition for $15.00 and looked like a giddy little kid carrying that desk to the bus! I am so very excited to make this as a special Christmas gift for my Riley. I hope loves it and gets lots of use from it. Thank you for the inspiration!!! You ROCK!!!
    Many, Many thanks!!!
