Reindeer Names Sign

Happy Monday everyone!!
Well it should be for some...because hopefully you'll be having short weeks :)

We get out Tuesday for Thanksgiving break and that means Monday isn't looking so bad right now!!

Plus I'm so happy to be back sharing a fun Christmas project with you guys!!
Last week was amazing with all the fabulous guests we had!
(and giveaways are still open until Wednesday so hurry and get those entries in!! Check out the sidebar.)

I know it's really supposed to be Turkey week but I'm dying to share Christmas projects and if I don't start now, I'll run out of time before it actually gets here :)

So anywho...
I've decided in the past couple years that I adore reindeer.
I always gravitate towards reindeer decor for Christmas and last year I picked up several way cute deer to add to my stash during after-christmas sales (those are the best!)

So I decided to just run with that and make a fun reindeer names sign- plus it makes little man want to sing Rudolph which makes me smile :)

I started with a plain white scrap piece of wood I had.
(imagine it white here...I forgot to take a before picture...my bad!)

And I painted it Rustoleum's enamel red.
I adore this stuff, not only because it's the prettiest red but because it is the SHINIEST stuff ever.
Perfect for a rudolph inspired project, huh?

I thought forever about how to do the letters.
I didn't really want to go the cricut route.
And I've gotten tired of printing them and cutting them out.
So I decided to try this really cool technique I picked up somewhere in the blogworld.

It involves this stuff...

Yup, just regular old wax paper...

And the letters are made with this awesome paint.
It's just regular white 3-D paint with the tip on the end.
Perfect for writing with and gives a pretty, pearl-y sheen.

I was a little nervous about trying this out but it worked like a charm.
Notice I only printed one name to begin with because I was that sure it would epically fail on me.

So Dasher was the guinea pig.

You take the printed name, slip it under the wax paper and then just write nice and slow with the paint.

The paint has a tendancy to bubble out sometimes but you can usually go back and fix it.
Or just do another letter over again.
I did that several times to get the letters looking the way I wanted.

I was so excited that it worked that I may have done a little happy dance :)

And then quickly printed out the rest of the names...

After I finished writing all the names, I carefully lifted the wax paper and slid it onto my dining room table to dry.
This is the part where homework took over my life and I ended up leaving them there for two or three days.
So they had a lot of time to dry...
but in all reality, they should be ready after 24 hours or so.

Once they were all dry, you can move them around without worrying about them cracking or smearing.
These things are tough.

I carefully peeled them off the wax paper and arranged them onto my board I had painted for them.

I was all ready to have to carefully hot glue them down but when I set them on the board, they stuck fabulously.
I pushed them down a bit more and they've completely stayed just like that.
And the sign has been moved and shuffled quite a bit now and they're still sticking good.

Call it luck or that super shiny spraypaint, but if yours don't mysteriously just stick to your wood, then a dot of glue should hold it fine :)

I scuffed my sign up a bit around the edges to bring out the original white.
And she's ready to go :)

I love the 3-d effect of the letters and the pearly color is perfect for the reindeer names!

I also glazed the sign before I put the letters on to mute the red just a bit and add a little more depth.
So pretty.

I'm thinking the reindeer will be making an appearance all over our house this Christmas :)

I'm trying to hold off on bringing out the Christmas boxes until after Thanksgiving but it's been so hard this year!
Little man asked me if we were going to decorate our tree today and I really wanted to say yes.
But we're holding off just a bit longer...

Plus I want lots of time to get things out and enjoy it,
instead of having to rush and get it done after classes one day :)

But I'm loving this new addition to our decor this year!!

And you know you want the reindeer to make an appearance at your home too!!

What's your favorite christmas decor?

I hope you guys have a fantastic start to your week!!
I have lots more to show you so keep checking back :)

  3. I love it! Visiting from Kurtz Korner. I like that you distressed the edges a bit. Thanks for the great idea... I may have to try this! On another note, the Rustoleum red is just what I've been looking for to paint a metal daybed frame - it's for my mom's guest room and she wants it a shiny red... this would be perfect!!

  6. It's so cute!!! I do love the bright shiny red, very Christmas spirit.

I love how you did it without the Cricut too. I've been over dependent on mine and can't imagine doing anything having to do with letters - without it hah!
