Trash to Treasure Makeover: Chippy Door Sign

If you hung out with me enough,
you would very likely end up on one of my roadside rescue adventures :)

I mentioned on facebook a couple weeks ago that hubby went and bought me a cool multi-bit screwdriver for my bday and literally went to my car and put it inside.
He was not thrilled that I had been using my roadside emergency toolkit to take apart pieces of furniture so they could fit in my car.

I'm definitely that person who gets giddy for trash day because there's so many treasures that people just want to throw to the trash truck!
I've also been out in pouring rain to rescue a table and hopped out in between classes to rescue a cool piece I saw on my commute.

I've also learned that my little Camry can hold a lot more than I ever imagined.
(I should totally advertise for Toyota!)

I'm crazy.
But I get way fun pieces that way :)
I usually share pics of my most recent curbside finds on my facebook page as I get them,
so if you'd like to keep up with my craziness, head over and like my page!

I've gotten some insanely awesome pieces in the past couple weeks so I can't wait to show you some of the fun things I've been up to with them :)

But for now,
I'm going to show you a quick makeover with one of my smaller roadside rescues.

I found this awesome chippy door type dealio a while back and knew it would make a way cool sign.

Isn't it fun?
As soon as I grabbed it up, I knew I wouldn't change it too much.
I loved the original chippiness of it.

I wanted a super distressed, messy type design.
So I pulled out my old scrapbooking stash and used random stickers to make words all over the middle inset.
No rhyme or reason.
I just kinda played with it.

I then used white paint to paint over the whole middle inset.
While it was still drying, I used tweezers to peel the stickers off.
I purposefully made sure some of the stickers didn't lay down all the way because I wanted a little leakage :)
Adds to that whole distressed, messy look.

I have a whole bucket of cool hardware pieces so I mixed a couple pieces together, painted them blue and then screwed them on the bottom part of the board.

I distressed them a bit to let some of the dark brass come through.

I love, love how it turned out.
I love pieces that don't need a ton of work- just a little love :)

I didn't touch the original black color on the sides.
All natural, baby.

I think one of the hardest things for some people is being able to picture what something can be as soon as they see it.
So since they don't see something in their head right then, they'll pass it by.

Even if I can't see the finished design yet, I always look for potential.
For interesting little details.
Chances are, if it turns my head and makes me interested...
I know I'll end up having the perfect idea for it at some point.

It's a bit harder for me to justify when I see something at Goodwill or a flea market and don't know right off how I'm going to use it.
But my roadside items are free which means a free canvas for me to work with :)

My garage might have a hoarders-esque quality to it at times,
but I'm never lacking for inspiration and I'm always amazed at what a pile of old doors, drawers and scrap wood can become!!!

Right now, this guy is hanging in my garage right next to my door.
I like that it's a nice reminder of things that are important to us :)

Do you have any fun roadside rescue stories?
I'd love to hear them!!!

In the next few weeks, I'll be sharing some of my bigger roadside rescue pieces!!
Aren't you excited??

I'm still working my little butt off trying to finish some of my school projects that are due soon :)
I hope you guys are having a great week.
Friday is so close!!

Fun & Colorful Easter Printable!

Are you tired of printables yet?

Or is that even a possibility?

I always love to get fun ones made up for different holidays and I made this one a few months back actually!
I was singing one of my favorite songs to little man at bedtime and the thought popped into my head that it would be a great Easter printable!
But it's not so overtly Easter that you can't have it out at other times too :)

Do you love this song as much as I do??

And of course, it's in bunches of spring colors!
Six to be exact :)

I made a pale grey one that can be more neutral for those of you who like to have brightly colored frames!

As with all my free printables,

Vintage Inspired Spring Wreath

Spring break is over.
And I'm still not quite ok with that...

I'm trying to look at it as being that much closer to the end of the semester...
but it's hard when you come back from a relaxing week and have to spring right back into major projects.

These next two weeks are going to be ca-razy with a capital C.
So you'll have to bear with me :)
I might have to dissapear and hide away somewhere if I ever manage to get all my projects done...

In the meantime,
I wanted to show you a fun spring wreath I did a while back.

Yes...I said a while back.
I was in desperate need of some springification (my own word!)
So I whipped this little sweetheart up :)

Isn't it sunshine-y and sweet??

I loved using all the different textures and items out of my stash.

Plus I extra heart this wreath because it was FREE and I had to be a little creative because I had NO wreath form.

So, what's a girl to do?
Why...grab an old swimming toy of course.
We had several pool noodles kicking it in our garage that we never use...
could be something to do with the fact that we don't own a pool and usually don't lug these when we do go.

It's just one of those cheapy, walmart ones.

But they make the PERFECT wreath forms.
Not even lying.
Nice, round and plump :)

I bent it until it made a circle and then used a serrated knife to cut the excess off.
I wrapped some packing tape around a couple of times to keep it together.
Easy peasy.

And a lot cheaper than any wreath form you can get at the craft store.

The only drawback with using a pool noodle is that the wreath form you end up with is a lot thicker around than regular ones.

Which wouldn't be a problem...
unless you're making a yarn wreath.

Because it takes quite a bit longer to wrap this guy than a regular, thin one.
But it's well worth it :)

I used some pretty grey yarn I had on hand.

I sifted through my button stash to find yellow ones and scattered them with hot glue on one side of the wreath.

I also wrapped some cream colored yarn in an 'x' pattern to give it a little extra sumthin' sumthin'.

The fun part was creating some funky shapes and flowers to go on the other side.
I had some chipboard circles so I just covered them in fun yellow and grey fabrics I had.

I loved the outline of the circle being wrapped :)
I had some fun vintage-esque buttons too so I popped those on in the middle of some of my rolled flowers.

I love how bright it turned out!
I'm very much a 'yellow' person so this wreath makes me smile!

You can see part of a doily peeking out above one of my yellow rolled flowers.
I just used a paper doily from the Dollar Store and cut the edge of it off.

It kind of frames the flower which is pretty.

I love de-stashing a bit and using what I have on hand to make something.
Do you guys do that too?

What do you think?
Are you still loving the grey/yellow combo this spring?

I can't belive I still haven't shown you my craft room reveal.
I promise I won't keep it from you forever...
although it feels like it's been years since I did it :)

I'll give you a hint though- this guy totally makes an appearance in it.

Well...I"m off to do homework.
Wish me Luck :)

'Real or Not Real?' Hunger Games Printable!!

So I told you guys I made a couple Hunger Games printables, right??

Cuz I'm that nerdy, I know :)

I'm in the midst of finally putting the finishing touches on my master bedroom redo so there is all kinds of half-finished projects lying around.

Plus it's pouring buckets here so that makes it a tad bit hard to maneuver the miter saw and the jigsaw in my garage.
Cuz it's full of craziness right now.
You don't even want to know.

So I just took a shot in the dark and thought you'd much rather see a pretty printable than my messy, sawdust-filled, rather wet garage :)

But I really can't wait to show you the end product of all that chaos!!

Anywho.
I have to show you my favorite of this next little Hunger Games Series.
Even though the ending was sad, I LOVED the 'real or not real?' quote between Katniss and Peeta.
So of course I had to make a couple printables including it.

This one with the mockingjay is my fave:

And it's in three colors:

And if you'd rather have a more simplified version, here are three colors sans the Mockingjay:

Hunger Games Inspired Printable!

It's Hunger Games week around here!!!

Well, really it's spring break week :)
But they're both pretty awesome.
And spring break just means that I get to enjoy looking forward to it that much more.

Cuz Friday me and hubby will be watching the first installment of The Hunger Games series on the IMAX screen which makes me happy!!

I'm sorry in advance if it's not your fave...but I know I'm not the only one super excited about it!!

And if you want Hunger Games fun all week, be sure to follow Kara from Mine for the Making on facebook as she'll be highlighting all things Hunger Games this week :)

So I thought I'd start spreading Hunger Games excitement through a couple of free printables!
Sound good to you??

This first one is actually a quote from the second book but I loved it so much that I instantly envisioned it as a printable.

And if you're not remembering it exactly, this is when Gale was whipped in the second book and Catniss was taking care of him back at her house :)
Love it.

(download versions do NOT have the watermark on the bottom)
And I was able to manipulate a mockingjay out of a bird too :)

And, of course, I gave you options!
